Shealy's Pond Heritage Preserve

Shealy's Pond Heritage Preserve was established by the DNR's Heritage Trust Program to protect a mature Atlantic white cedar forest and several rare plant species.

The preserve encompasses 62 acres along Scouter Creek in Lexington County, about 13 miles southwest of Columbia. It is centered around an old mill pond and associated wetlands on spring-fed Scouter Creek. County road 279 crosses the dam of the mill pond. The mill pond is about 6 acres. The remainder of the tract is Atlantic white cedar (AWC) swamp, except for about 6 acres of sandhills on the west side of the preserve which is forested primarily in longleaf pine and turkey oak.

To get there from Pelion, go north on state highway 302 for 6 miles to county road 279. Turn left on 279 and go 2 miles west to the preserve.
