USC Horseshoe

USC Horseshoe is a wonderful place to take kids to relax, burn off some energy, and take in a little history. It is best to visit during the summer when school is not in session simply because you will have difficulty finding a parking spot when school is in. However, it is worth the effort to enjoy the Horseshoe in spring or fall- try a Sunday or Saturday when the game is "away".

The Horseshoe itself is a 4-block area that includes 10 historic buildings arranged around a grassy area filled with brick paths and old trees. Turn the kids loose and let them follow the paths, chase squirrels and birds, or toss a frisbee around. You might also see if they can find the brass dedication markers on each tree or locate the five gardens in the Horseshoe.

Stop in the McKissick Museum at the center of the Horseshoe and pick up some information about the buildings and their gardens. A favorite garden is the Carolinana Garden behind the South Caroliniana Library. It features a three-tier fountain, a Civil War cannonball, and a marble column rejected in the construction of the State House. Other gardens are located at Lieber College, the President's House, Rutledge College, and McCutchen House. The President's House garden is private, but you can view it thriugh the gate. The Rutledge College garden is called the Sundial Garden while the McCutchen House gardens are found on either side of the building, which is now the Faculty Club.

To get there, take Assembly to Pendelton and turn left. The Horseshoe "opens" onto Sumter at Pendelton. Metered parking spaces are located around the Horseshoe or you may be able to find a space in the Pendelton St. garage.
