Admission: Free https://www.cla.sc.edu/mcks/ McKissick Museum is located on the USC Horseshoe. Parking can be a challenge when school is in but you shouldn't have too much trouble when school's out. See the USC Horseshoe information for more fun things to do while you are in the area. The McKissick Museum is located a building that was once the main library. It is a beautiful building with a lot of history, and a cool, quiet escape on a hot day. For some children, the highlight of the trip could be riding in the old-fasioned elevator located behing the reception desk. It has a swinging door outside and metal mesh gate inside so you can see the car moving. Don't be surprised if your kids want to ride up and down a few times. Of the two permanent exhibits at the museum, kids will like the gem and mineral exhibit the most. The exhibit is full of drawers that can be opened to view mineral specimens under glass. Semi-precious gems and fossils may also capture their attention. The mineral and gem exhibit is located upstairs. The Baruch silver collection may not hold their attention as long, although the life-size cutouts in front of the story of the collection are eye-catching. The silver is located downstairs, to the right of the information desk.
Two floors of galleries feature changing exhibitions that include folk art, science, art, and regional history. Educational programs (aimed at children 3rd through 5th grade) are offered and include lectures, concerts, craft demonstrations, and teacher training workshops. Call for current exhibits and events. |
